Hi, I’m Chris

I am a specialist psychiatrist in private practice in Stellenbosch in the Western Cape since 2010. I obtained my medical degree (MBChB) from the University of Pretoria in 2002. I completed my internship at Frere Hospital, East London and my Community Service at Potchefstroom Hospital where I also completed my Diploma in Mental Health (DMH). I completed my specialist training at the Stellenbosch University (Stikland and Tygerberg Hospitals) between 2006 – 2009, obtaining my master’s degree in Psychiatry (MMED (Psych)) and my Fellowship of the College of Psychiatrists of South Africa (FC Psych(SA)).

On a more personal note: I am Chris. I often ask myself how I ended up becoming a psychiatrist and why I have such a strong feeling of enthusiasm for working with men. As is mostly the case, it has something to do with my own life story and especially my journey with masculinity. Having struggled with not feeling ‘good enough’ since a young age and still having insecurities about being ‘man enough’ that creep up on me every so often, I was more impelled to do this work than it being a conscious choice. Over the last decade, I have done a lot of ‘inner work’ in myself, and this work is never completed. So still being on the journey myself, means that my approach to working with men is more like being a companion to your journey than being an expert standing at the other side of the finish line telling you what to do. It is your life which you must own and explore! I would like to encourage you and guide you on your journey back to the ‘man enough’ person you already are. I offer to be your travel agent on your quest to meet Adam (again). The route is tough, but so rewarding!
